I am very excited to share this little mending collaboration I did with Dani of Picnicwear, a slow fashion brand that specializes in using vintage towels and upcycled fabrics in their fun, summery, size-fluid designs. With a few exceptions...
Dani had also been collecting vintage sweaters and berets, some of which needed mending. I was thrilled when she suggested we work together to repair them & create a product collection together.
(Not to play favourites, but this orange one is my favourite.)
I used my Swift Darning Loom to create little confetti patches on these wool sweaters using, you guessed it, vintage wool yarn to match. The darning loom helped me to work pretty quickly, with the average patch taking just under ten minutes.
We marked each of the holes with a scrap of yarn and a pin, so I would know what colour to darn with.
Not that speed is always the goal, but it did mean that we were able to repair almost a dozen pieces in the few short days I was in North Carolina. Dani embellished a few of the pieces with original embroidery, inspired by her impressive collection of 1960s craft books and illustrated storybooks.
We also incorporated some crochet patches, either created by other contemporary fibrecrafty folks or found at estate sales, which made for some delightfully playful statement pieces to liven up your cold-weather outfits.
